Redesigning V.3 for Carta, Stanford's official course exploration and planning platform used by over 95% of student population. I'm in the progress of redesigning AI-integrated course recommendations and course sequencings. Carta V.3 is projected to launch by April. In the meantime, check out Carta V.2 below.
Disturbing
Students expressed roommates disturbing them during quiet hours or interrupting meetings.
"My roommate would barge in while I was interviewing or in the middle of an important call"
Chore Management
Students often argue with roommates regarding chore rotation and responsibilities.
"We'd always argue about who's turn it is to take out the trash or swiffer"
Guest Rules
Students were bothered with roommates having guests over.
"We all agreed to not have guests during the weekdays but because we didn't have any formal rules, they'd overstep boundaries"

My focus for redesigning V.3 Carta was on course recommendations and sequencing. To learn more about current user pain points during the course planning process, I interviewed 11 students across various majors and years. I focused my interview design and questions on the planning process throughout different timeframes in order to create a user journey map and brainstorm solutions across the process.

Lack of trust
Students trust their peers with same majors or similar academic interests. Because all data and evaluations don't account for student majors, users can't fully trust course evaluations.
Lack of trust in reviews
Students trust their peers with same majors or similar academic interests. Without knowing who or what kind of students are writing reviews, they don't know how to trust course reviews or whose advice to follow.

Requirements fulfilled by courses are unclear
Students are confused about what requirements each course fulfills and wish they could find easy substitute courses that fulfill the same requirement.

Fear of last minute shop, drop, and enroll
Stanford allows students to "shop" classes for the first three weeks. However, students are worried that if they shop classes and choose to drop them, they'll have to scramble to look for new classes to fulfill unit requirements.

Unsure of how to space out classes across 4 years
Students are worried they won't be able to graduate on time if they don't space out their major requirements well across 4 years. Some seniors expressed course overload during their last year due to not taking major requirements earlier on.
